Ovarian cancer is the sixth leading cause of cancer death in women in the United States and the deadliest of all gynecologic cancers, according to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. Because symptoms are often vague and difficult to recognize – and there are no proven early-screening tests – ovarian cancer is usually diagnosed at a later stage. And, while detecting ovarian cancer in its early stages can improve outcomes, it’s not always possible. That’s why we stand behind Women’s Health CME here at Skin, Bones, Hearts, and Private Parts.
Ovarian Cancer Awareness: Why It Matters
To help change these current realities, Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month seeks to raise awareness and advocate for better screening, prevention, and treatment of this serious diagnosis. Knowing risk is an important aspect of awareness, and the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition has stated that risks can include factors as wide ranging as:
- Getting older
- Overweight or obesity
- Childbirth later in life or never having a full-term pregnancy
- Hormone replacement therapy
- Family history of ovarian cancer, breast cancer, or colorectal cancer
- Personal history of breast cancer
- Inherited genetic mutation
- Family cancer syndromes
- Fertility treatment
- Smoking.
The Importance of Women’s Health-focused CME
At the same time, the Council on Graduate Medical Education’s (COGME) Fifth Report on Women and Medicine states that “Primary care physicians (PCPs) who completed residency training prior to the establishment of new guidelines for women’s health education are dependent on continuing medical education (CME) to update their knowledge and skills.”
At Skin, Bones, Hearts & Private Parts, we take this guidance seriously, with women’s health an integral part of our CME curriculum – both at our in-person CME Conferences and via our Online CME options – both Virtual CME and On-demand CME.
“Take advantage of as much education and training as you can,” urges Barbara Dehn, NP, a women’s health nurse practitioner and speaker for Skin, Bones, Hearts & Private Parts. “In health and science, there are new discoveries and challenges that happen every day, and we can provide better care by staying up to date.”
Barbara’s ability to share her own wisdom and expertise is equally important: After one of our In-person CME Conferences in Pensacola, where she led a full-day track on women’s health, an attendee told her: “You made it easy for me to feel safe asking questions, because in our profession, we’re supposed to know everything, and I felt like I could ask anything.”
Another attendee added – in light of the session where a lively discussion centered around some of the more complicated concerns that arise with hormone replacement therapy, non-hormonal options, and how to best manage expected side effects – “What I really appreciated was how much engagement and interaction there was with both the live audience and the virtual audience.”
