November is National Diabetes Month, an annual effort to raise awareness of diabetes, its complications, and prevention strategies. Diabetes occurs when blood glucose is too high, and 38.4 million Americans have been diagnosed with it. An additional 97.6 million people ages 18 or older have prediabetes, a condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. More than 8 in 10 adults with prediabetes don’t know they have it. Diabetes can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart, and it is linked to some types of cancer. Skin, Bones, Hearts & Private Parts – alongside the American Diabetes Association – believes that diabetes CME education is the first step in recognizing, living with, and treating diabetes.
Achieve Diabetes CME Today
For individuals living with either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, staying healthy involves a combination of understanding personal risks, making informed lifestyle choices, and actively managing overall well-being. This may include:
- Know your risk for developing diabetes; a person is more likely to develop type 2 diabetes if they are overweight or obese; are age 35 or older; have a family history of diabetes; are African American, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic or Latino, or Pacific Islander; are not physically active; or have prediabetes.
- Manage your blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.
- Take small steps toward healthy habits, such as planning healthy meals, being physically active, getting enough sleep, and not smoking.
- Take your medicines on time.
- Reach or maintain a healthy weight.
- Take care of your mental health.
- Work with your health care team.
For nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PAs), registered nurses (RNs), and physicians tasked with diagnosing, treating, and helping manage diabetes in their practices, our diabetes CME – at our In-person CME Conferences and On-demand CME – can bring you up to date on the latest research and advances in treatment.
