It’s August, which means it’s National Psoriasis Awareness Month! Every August, Psoriasis Awareness Month shines a light on patient stories and raises awareness for over 100 million worldwide. Psoriasis is a lifelong autoimmune condition that causes skin cells to multiply rapidly, resulting in thick, scaly patches. Research shows psoriasis can impact daily life, often leading to social struggles and stigma that affect overall well-being. At Skin, Bones, Hearts & Private Parts, we proudly support awareness through Dermatology CME that equips providers to better care.
How Dermatology CME Improves Patient Care
According to a study published in Science Direct, Performance Improvement CME activities make a big impact on the care and treatment of patients with psoriasis. The study found, in fact, a statistically significant improvement in the advisement of patients with psoriasis regarding their increased risk for cardiovascular disease, to contact their primary care provider for cardiovascular risk assessment, and in shared decision making regarding the treatment plan. Also, the study found an overall statistically significant improvement in history taking per the guidelines.
With that kind of opportunity in mind, dermatology is part of our full-day sessions at every one of our In-person CME Conferences in 2025. And with five conferences still to go, there are still plenty of opportunities to up your game on dermatological conditions and treatments, taught by Jameka McElroy, MSPAS, PA-C (Pensacola Beach-Sept); Victoria Lazareth, MA, MSN, NP-C, DCNP (Nashville, Orlando-Oct, Las Vegas); and Margaret (Maggie) McKernan, DMSc, PA-C (Austin).
Together, this dynamic trio will cover topics as varied as:
- Common dermatology conditions: skin of color edition
- Benign lumps and bumps
- A guide to common rashes
- Vitiligo and mimickers explained
- Dermatology drugs for inflammatory conditions
- Science, infections, infestations, and bites
- Adnexal diseases
- Papulosquamous diseases
- Dermatologic therapies
- Neoplasms
- Identifying benign and malignant skin lesions
- Common skin and soft tissue infections.
The Future of Dermatology Treatment
“As a dermatology physician assistant,” McElroy added, “one of the most exciting advances in the field that I’m eager to discuss with CME conference attendees is the development of next-generation biologics for inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. These newer agents offer highly targeted mechanisms of action, blocking specific cytokines such as IL-17, IL-23, or IL-4/13 pathways, which are key drivers of inflammation. This precision means better disease control with fewer side effects than older, broader immunosuppressive therapies. The continued refinement of biologics, along with emerging long-term safety data, is something I’m enthusiastic to share at upcoming CME events. These innovations represent a paradigm shift in managing chronic dermatologic conditions, moving us closer to truly personalized care for our patients.”
